About COUNTER 5 Reports
Project COUNTER is a standardizing body that issues a Code of Practice for use by publishers and content providers to count and report usage so that libraries can evaluate use in consistent ways across electronic resource platforms. In addition to the existing event metrics, Artstor is pleased to finally offer COUNTER Release 5 reports compliant with the COUNTER Code of Practice.

COUNTER 5 Report Types
- *Platform Master Report (PR) -- A summary-level report that you can customize to include Item Requests, Item Investigations, and Searches.
- Platform Report 1 (PR_P1) -- A standard view of the Platform report, the PR_P1 provides summary detail of Total Item Requests, Unique Item Requests, and Searches Platform.
- *Item Master Report (IR) -- An item-level report that you can customize to include Item Requests, Item Investigations, and Searches. This report includes usage of all Forum-published items on Artstor, including Artstor's licensed and open collections, public collections, and institutional collections.
- Artstor Cross-Platform Usage Report (ART_CP) -- usage of Artstor licensed and open images on both Artstor and JSTOR platforms, including the 2+ million Artstor images that were made available on JSTOR in February 2021.
- Multimedia Item Requests (IR_M1) -- A standard view of the Item report, the IR_M1 reports on usage at the item level using Total Item Requests.
*In the PR and IR reporting, you will see Data_Type and Metric_Type values that will not appear on your report because they are not relevant to Artstor. All Artstor content is of the “Multimedia” Data Type.
Additionally, Unique Title Requests and Unique Title Investigations are only calculated for Book content, and thus not relevant to Artstor. These options appear in the report selection screen to follow the COUNTER Code of Practice.
Which report should I use?
- COUNTER Platform Reports: commonly used for annual reporting. ACRL Academic Library Trends and Statistics Survey / IPEDS recommend using “Total_Item_Requests” for Multimedia reporting in COUNTER Release 5.
- COUNTER Item Reports: shows usage of individual Artstor images, and can be helpful towards identifying spikes in usage related to promotional activity.
- Artstor Cross-Platform Usage Report: a quick way to see Artstor image usage associated with your institution from both the JSTOR and Artstor platforms. Learn more about Artstor on JSTOR.
- User Engagement Report:
- a comprehensive view of user events on Artstor, which offers a breakdown of the types of usage that contribute to Total Item Requests, such as Views and Downloads. This report includes view and download activity (no longer available in COUNTER reports), browsing, sharing, searching, image group activity, and user login and registrations.
- offers a comprehensive view of user events on Artstor including browsing, image group activity, image uploads, usage, searching, sharing, and login/registration data. Usage is now calculated in Total Item Requests to align with COUNTER 5. Designed to help libraries understand how the Artstor platform is used for teaching and learning activities.
Key Terms and Metrics
The current COUNTER standard does not specify reporting on usage format, e.g. views vs downloads. Usage is consolidated into a single metric called Item Requests. COUNTER 5 does not report on specific user behavior such as browsing, user accounts, and sharing. Artstor captures this information in the new Engagement Report.
